Burns Dismissed with his Opening Delivery of Ashes series
The first delivery of an Ashes series represents significantly more than just one delivery.
It embodies an heart-pounding two to four moments of pure theatre, where every bit of pre-match discussion finally ends.
"To establish the tone for the entire series would prove really cool," remarked England paceman Gus Atkinson when asked about the possibility recently.
"I know we've witnessed numerous historic first-ball occasions in Ashes history. The chance to add that history would be incredible."
As Atkinson observes, the first delivery has created several of the most iconic Ashes moments - ones that seemed to establish that storyline and at least became easy to reference later on...
Skipper Ben Stokes declared at 393 for 8 just before the close during day one of the 2023 Ashes contest
Zak Crawley had spent the lead-up for the 2023 Ashes planning hitting that opening delivery to four runs - regarding aiming to "create an impact."
Australian captain Pat Cummins approached at the pavilion end when Crawley cracked a drive past the covers amid deafening roars by English fans.
"I've long been a big admirer of the first ball in the Ashes," the opener explained.
"I was following them from growing up so I understood a couple weeks out that should we won the toss there would be an excellent opportunity to receiving that ball."
"I chatted with Brooky regarding this while we played golfing in Scotland - saying it could be cool if I could hit the first one for runs and make a statement."
The English may not have claimed that contest - and Australia thrillingly took that first Test during last day - but it proved a preview of the way Ben Stokes' side would play aggressively throughout the series.
England collapsed for 147 runs during the first day of the 2021-22 series
This moment at Birmingham proved one of rare first salvos that went in favor of England, however.
Far more frequently they've served as ominous signs of the Australian dominance that was following.
During 2021's series, Mitchell Starc dismissed English batsman Rory Burns with a leg-stump half-volley at Brisbane becoming the first bowler to take a wicket on the opening delivery in an Ashes contest after Australian bowler Ernest McCormick in 1936.
The English preparation had been lacking and at that instant of Australian celebration the tourists received a blow to their morale.
"My confidence simply dropped to the floor," said bowler Stuart Broad, watching watching from the pavilion.
"You have built toward these matches then immediately, first ball, he is out."
The series were lost within eleven more days and the Australians won the series 4-0.
Michael Slater scored 176 in the first innings of the 1994-95 Ashes, having driven the opening ball of the contest to boundary
It's also no surprise a captain who reveled in "psychological warfare" thought proceedings were set through a similar event 27 before.
Steve Waugh with Australia were seeking a fourth Ashes series victory in a row when batsman Michael Slater began 1994's series by decisively crunching English seamer Phil DeFreitas to boundary past the offside.
"It was like 'okay team here we go again we've got them already'," said the captain, who would feature all five Tests in a 3-1 home win.
"Psychologically it was like we're on top already so let's just keep pressing on. We understand how to beat these guys."
Foreboding.
Australia made 602 for 9 declared during innings one after Steve Harmison's errant delivery, with skipper Ricky Ponting scoring 196
But what if that ball is just that - one among 10,000 or so beginning the contest?
The errant delivery Steve Harmison bowled to begin the 2006-07 series - where he bowled the ball into the grasp of captain Andrew Flintoff in the slips, almost avoiding the pitch in the process - proved the most remembered Ashes opener of all.
"I froze," the bowler told journalists shortly afterwards.
"I allowed the enormity of the moment overwhelm me. Everything felt so unfamiliar to me. My entire body was nervous."
"I couldn't stop my grip to stop being sweaty. That initial delivery slipped from my hands, the second also slipped, and, following that, I possessed no consistency, nothing."
The English claimed the 2005 Ashes fifteen before yet were comprehensively beaten five-nil. Some contend that series were lost in that exact instant.
"We simply weren't skilled enough to beat
