For Bellingham to aims to earn his place into the English best team, the smart move to eliminate the unnecessary reactions. His reaction after noticing that the substitute board was going up after an evening of inconsistency in the match against Albania was unacceptable.
"I prefer not to blow it out of proportion but I hold to my words 'behaviour is key' and respect towards the players who come in," Tuchel said. "Choices are taken and you must accept them when you're on the field."
The midfielder must understand. It was unnecessary for a tantrum. The captain had only moments earlier made it England two goals ahead in an inconsequential qualifier, with only six minutes remaining and the player, after a below-par performance, received a caution for bringing down Armando Broja. It was not a debatable decision. In fact it would have been unwise for Tuchel to not substitute him given that there was a chance the midfielder would be suspended of the opening game of the competition by picking up a another booking.
Yet Bellingham drew all eyes toward himself. No one could overlook the 22-year-old’s frustration upon understanding that he would be substituted for a teammate. His arms went up in exasperation and although he exchanged a handshake on his way to the bench there was no doubt that the manager was displeased.
This represents the hurdle for Bellingham. He congratulated his teammate for sending in the ball for the captain to score his second goal, but everything else was harmful to his cause. It's not like complaining was going to alter the decision. The German has stressed repeatedly following squad protocols and the necessity of acting professionally.
He, left out of the previous squad, has been under scrutiny after returning to the squad recently. Essentially his place has been in question and he has not done himself any favours with his response to coming off the pitch as England completed a ideal group stage by overcoming a tough opposition from Albania.
It means opinions are divided on whether the team operate most effectively with Bellingham in the team. The performance was open to interpretation. There was experimentation by the coach in the beginning. Under him, England have gained the team organization and direction lately, building with a defensive midfielder, a central midfielder, a playmaker and out-and-out wingers, but it felt different versus Albania. Quansah was made his England debut, the midfielder was in the starting lineup at this level and the positioning of Stones as a part-time midfielder created a faint echo to City's 2023 treble winners.
Bellingham was a mixed bag. He created an opportunity for his teammate during the second half but at times seemed trying too hard. Several hurried and errant passes. There was a needless bit of aggro with a rival player at the beginning. The team looked disjointed during most of the second period. An opportunity for Albania resulted from he lost the ball cheaply. The yellow card was shown after he lost the ball to Broja and brought down the former Chelsea striker.
In the end the bench quality made the difference. The coach brought on Foden, who appeared better suited to the spot that Bellingham had played earlier in the match, and Saka. Later Saka provided a corner for Kane to open the scoring. It was a reminder that corners and free-kicks will be crucial at the World Cup.
However, all talk was about Bellingham. The excellence of Rashford’s assist for the second goal was a little lost in the ridiculousness of the substitution incident. At the end, all eyes were on the midfielder. Tuchel came over to his side and guided the Real Madrid midfielder towards the travelling England fans. The bond between them is not damaged. The coach isn't ready to discard the player just yet. Yet whether the coach is prepared to offer him the central position remains in doubt.
